How to start your business’s first blog

Benefits of starting business’s blog

Today, everyone seems to have a website. In fact, it’s almost rare not to have one! But if your site is just sitting there collecting dust, you might be wondering why you even bothered getting one in the first place.

Many people make the mistake of thinking that having a website is enough.  You can have all the bells and whistles,  but if  you are not adding content to your site on a regular basis, you are missing out on some major benefits.

Owning  a blog  is one of the best  ways to drive traffic back to your site.  But just like any other web property, you need to think about what you are trying to accomplish before jumping into the blogging world.

There is no doubt that starting a blog can be an uphill battle, but there are plenty of benefits for those who persevere. If you’re still not convinced that a blog should be a part of your online strategy, here are some reasons to get you started.

1.  Increased brand exposure

If you don’t have a place for your business to live on the internet, people can’t find you.  This is even more true if you’re selling products and services.  A blog is a great way to establish trust and authority for your brand.

Once you have your first few posts on the site, search engines will begin to take notice.  This can result in more visitors and interactions with potential customers and it might even lead to higher rankings in the search engine results pages (SERP).

2.  Increased traffic

SEO stands for search engine optimization, which can help your site rank higher in the SERP results.  If you are looking to increase organic traffic to your website, blogging is a great way to go about it.  Along with more visitors comes the chance of converting those leads into paying customers.  After all, blogging is an excellent way to establish your thought leadership.

Of course, you can also use social media sites to increase traffic back to your blog.  Some of the most popular options are Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter.  By regularly updating these accounts with new posts, you are effectively exposing your blog content to a larger online audience.

How to get started?

What is your blog’s purpose or niche

Knowing the purpose of your blog will help you stay focused. Identify what you want to accomplish with your venture, and who you want to reach with your content. The scope of topics you cover should be intentionally selected based on this information. You may decide to create an outlet for yourself to write on whatever you wish, or decide to choose a specific target audience and theme your blog accordingly.

Define the basics of your targeted audience

Who are you writing for? Your audience is crucial when creating content for your new blog. You can determine who would be interested in reading your blog by defining your target audience. Being able to answer these questions will help you identify who your blog is for:

Do I have a specific age range in mind? Do I want a more local or general focus? Do I know what gender my readers would be? What are their interests and hobbies? What is the socioeconomic status of my target market?

Create a content calendar

Blogging on a regular basis is critical for gaining traffic and establishing yourself as an authority.  In order to stay motivated and committed, plan out what you will post on your new blog on a monthly basis. You can easily do this with a spreadsheet or by using one of the countless blogging calendars available online.

This will help you stay organized and focused on your goals.  You can also determine what days you will post, which is important to ensure that there’s continuity across all of your future content. Once you have a clear schedule in place, it’ll be easier for you to plan posts ahead of time and stay engaged with your blog throughout the week.

Decide on your goals for the blog

Knowing what you are trying to accomplish with your blog will help you determine what kind of content should be shared on it.  This can include sales, free offers, traffic generation or anything else that seems useful and relevant to your target audience.  Creating specific goals is important because it will allow you to determine what types of posts will engage your audience and get them to take action.

For example, if you are selling products on your new blog, creating blog posts that highlight product reviews or offer giveaways would be more beneficial than generic content about blogging or social media marketing.  If you aren’t sure how to accomplish these feats, don’t worry — you can always hire a professional.

Can you commit the time and effort to blog regularly

Starting a successful blog requires significant financial and time investments. Starting a blog may require more maintenance than initially expected, but nothing worth having comes without work! Starting a successful company or personal blog does take commitment, but creating one can be incredibly rewarding as well. Like any long-term commitment, it is important to realize here that blogging has some time and effort requirements. Starting a blog can be both fun and rewarding, but it does take consistent work and dedication.
